Environmental sustainability and preservation is a topic that naturally interests everyone, as the state of our environment is linked to the well being of each individual both now and in the future. Ensuring environmental sustainability is the 7th of the UN’s Millennium Development Goals(MDGs).
The target was/is to:
a) Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programs; reverse loss of environmental resources
b) Reduce biodiversity loss, achieving, by 2010, a significant reduction in the rate of loss
c) Halve, by 2015, the proportion of the population without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation
d) By 2020, to have achieved a significant improvement in the lives of at least 100 million slum-dwellers
In a recent report by Core Savills, Dubai ranked third in the list of global cities with the highest number of green buildings for its compliance with Environmental Sustainability and Wellness. Dubai has the highest ratio of projects being certified with 81 percent of in-progress projects across global cities. In 2016, the Dubai Municipality made in mandatory for all existing and new buildings to implement green building standards to achieve a smart, sustainable city status for Dubai by 2021.
Interact Group International, head quartered in Dubai fully supports all Environmental Sustainability efforts and initiatives and applies this in all our business practices. Interior Design deals with space and so directly impacts the environment as bringing spaces to life is at the core of the business. Organizations are encouraged as a corporate social responsibility, to add activities related to the environment for saving it, and motivate its employees and clientele for taking an initiative toward it.
In Interior Design practise, it is the responsibility of all designers to make sustainable choices when it comes to selection of materials, its layout, elements design and in Space Planning as a whole.
Interior Design and Fit-Out companies must provide clients with energy conservation ideas, and ensure that they are incorporated in the project plan and fully implemented. The companies must also be committed to the use of environmentally friendly materials in all its works be it in walls, floorings, ceilings, lighting, fabrication and treatment. Anything that is identified as a contributor to environmental pollution must be avoided at all costs. The quality of an interior or exterior environment always has a direct bearing on the physical and mental health and wellbeing of everyone.
Though Interior Design is mainly aimed at aesthetics, it has been proven that Designers can still bring about innovation and show creativity in designs whilst sticking strictly to design principles by using environmentally sustainable methods in their way of thinking and in every aspect of their work. Maintenance of diverse natural systems functions on a long-term basis is necessary, considering the importance of having the needs of the future generation in mind.
In summary, when we take care of the environment, it would take care of us. Every business has a responsibility in this regard to make responsible decisions and choices that would ensure that its actions does not have a negative impact on the environment and society at large.
